Hey ya Guys!
I am actually new here, to Calgary, and this site! I happened to stumble across a poster for the site and gatherings "JAWS" when I was checking out 'The Sentry Box' I thought this might be a good way to meet new people and such... I have no friends T_T.... But any how....

I love to draw, I was big in to the arts when I was in high school and stuff and the love for it has continued on. So I am going to be posting some of my works, because I like to show it off (Only the good ones though :P) SO I hope you Enjoy!

 A new member... :!: :?: Wants to make friends at JAWS... heh heh... LOL. As Dante said: "Abandon ye hope, all who enter" (that's actually the correct quotation).

I have had a broken arm - then the flu - recently, so have had trouble posting anything. Also, we are at a low cycle in membership, so are pretty small right now. :D Thanx for reading all our insane postings. But try to use spell-check... just a suggestion....

 The best thing to do would be to show up Wednesday February 25th, at the back of the Sentry Box, before closing at 6:00 - that way you'll have a chance to get better acquainted with members and the club, an hour before we start. Hope you get a chance to read this beforehand.

8) Your artwork varies in quality, up to excellent. Is it due to either or both date or time spent? We have another "new" artist as well, who could do the JAWS club mascot (Phin-Phin - shark girl) - but there is currently no "official artist" or limit to number of those who want to try their hand... the other artist here on the website is the immediate Past President of JAWS, who created Phin-Phin.

About posting a section for Manga (proper title)... good idea. <kicking self> Eh eh, I now have an idea, I want to start a thread called "WTF", under General Discussion. Self-descriptive... not necessarily anime.

Taking your ideas from other places....

 RE: Spam On The Forums: Our current President relays that it was probably a spam-bot. I dreamed up a neat punishment, tho, no?

 RE: AMVs: Neat Death Note AMV. But for sheer, unadulterated insanity, nothing can beat AMVs based on Azumanga Daioh. :?

 RE: Gaming: Talk to H-rayz, aka Ray-kun - he runs the weekend gaming at the Sentry Box!! Currently Vice President of JAWS.

Spell check >_> urrmm, yes… heh, I try to but sometimes my spelling just gets away from me… I assume you found all my spelling mistakes in another Forum… heh it doesn’t help when you have dyslexia! Although I do try my very best to catching mistakes before I send them out lol ^.^ but I will try and pay a little more attention.

Heh, I actually found one of the flyers at the Sentry Box at the beginning of Feb, and I have been pretty much counting down the days till the 25th! Lol I am soooo people deprived! >_> I have no friends in Calgary T_T I just moved here out of the blue and its so different! Lol So I fully intent to be there for sure!
--> Will probably be the one wearing cat ears! ((<-- I like to wear them just for fun all the time!))

Ya my art does vary from utter crap to really good, I am not going to be modest but I think I have some Damn good pieces of work ;p
The quality of art has to do with Time period and how I was feeling. A lot of my art work that is crap is due to the environment I was in at that time, when I link it with the time period I was going through some rough patches… I only really do good work when I am happy and relaxed, this seems to be a hard thing for me, I am a really tense person at times and I am paranoid as hell, But I try to act calm and collect. So ya my art looks how I feel pretty much, with the exception of the woman with the hummer bird wings, she is a direct link to the emotion spite.

Well any how I look forward to meeting every one tomorrow! See you all then ^.~

:!: Hope we are going to see you and your boyfriend tonight? I think the gamer guy/VP will be bringing birthday cake. :?: I will try to come early this time... glitches happened (again) last time.

Sorry, I've still been feeling crappy. BTW: about Calgary weather... there is a curse about JAWS... it always snows on meeting nights. :? Eh, we'll be working on putting more posts....

We didn't get your names? :o Kim says that she and you just generally talked about the anime played at JAWS last month... not so much about the club itself.

Kim is dyslexic too. Just so that we can understand what's going on. No no, I didn't see you on any other forums, yet! Don't be afraid to use more of the emoticons built into the site. We're also a pretty welcoming group... we're not very big right now.

Yes, some people go through mood cycles, and it affects their life and functioning. I can understand about the art. You seem to be OK though.

BUT... OMG - I thought we'd get a goth GUY. Should have read your stuff closer. Then I was talking to your boyfriend instead. Neat cat ears and contacts. I guess a latter-day punker/otaku. Also - how did you post those animations as avatars??

A lot of us are older generation otaku. Oh, I have to learn more about Anime North!!! It is a long way from neo-Cowtown. Maybe some of us can go up to Animethon together in Edmonton this summer.

Oh man I sooo missed the meet! I have been working sooo much! Its been crazy, I have barely had a day to myself. I ended up having to work till 10:30pm Wed night and by the time I walked to the CB it would have been time for me to turn around and leave again :x ! But hopefully I will have a better job by next meet. This one is not really my thing. Canvassing for Plan Canada is great and all because your helping children, but really, I am a young lady and they have me walking around the NE till 8:30 to 9pm by myself. It’s just a little uncomfortable for me :? .

On that note, what did I miss this past wed? What shows did you guys watch? Maybe I can Youtube them and catch up. :o

OH YA, and also, Taylor is not my Boyfriend  lol, he is just my roommate. My bf is in the military and is currently stationed in Quebec ^.^ ((So if you know any young attractive single girls Taylor might be interested ^.~ lol :P ))

Lmao, a Goth Guy! Heheh that’s funny! No I am not Goth, I am just very random! Lol I wear lots of weird stuff like my cat ears and contacts, they always make people smile when they see me wearing stuff like that and it makes me smile when I can make other smile because of my silliness. The guy at Tim Horton’s earlier that day just thought it was the neatest thing he had ever seen!

Heh Yes Anime North is Awesome 8) ! I am going again this May too, it is always a blast! There are different rooms across the road from the convection center that are dedicated to all the different anime and you get to chill with people who like the same anime and discuses it, They are called Panel discussions. Then there is a HUGE dealers room with everything you could imagine Anime/Manga/Japanese! I have heard of this Edmonton One before too and would be very interested in checking it out! As long as its not the Aug 24th weekend because that’s when I go out to Fan Expo! Lol

And as for my animated avatar, Gir, Its just simply a GIF and when it asks for you to up load your image from your computer or outside source like Photobucket, just put in the code or do your browse and as long as it meet the Pixel size requirements then you can use it!

Hope to see you all next meet!
Jennifer :D

A little more about JAWS

Oh, cool to hear back from you, I thought we had scared you off. I posted at 4 am last time. Ignore the time clock on here, it is always way off. :? Sorry about the delay in posting this, I slept for 2 days after JAWS - then I've been trying to shake a cold for the past few days. Hm, you can still use your own DIY emoticons; but I also wonder where I can find an emoticon website??

Well, we ran out of birthday cake! Ray's buddy, Lyle, was supposed to get his Mom's grocery cart, but he only had his backpack instead... and Safeway cakes are expensive! So only got a 1/2... and the other new people Ray brought scarfed the rest. And Kim claims that chocolate makes her insomniac. (She's allergic to half the foods and doesn't care for the rest.) It was a yummy THICK chocolate cake... But I'll get Kim to bake a cake at one of my neighbor's - for the April JAWS. Then you can also get to meet the other/online gamer Carole (yiyth)... who we also owe a whole bunch of cake to. Um, didn't say how old you were... I guess 20something. But as to combining all the candles on the cake, well I guess we don't want to burn down the SB!!!

Ya, the NE and SE are getting to be pretty fearsome parts of Cowtown. 0_o (No, that is not a JAWS emoticon but then there is no equivalent on this site!) They used to be OK; but then all the gangbangers moved into town (from Vancouver - and Ottawa?!) and think they're so cool and know it all. Well, I don't know if we should hand out JAWS flyers to them... though maybe if they come they would also find out that not all anime is violent, not anymore.

Eh, you would have got the SB at midnight - when we were packing up! The buses also don't go there that late. :? I am going to write to Calgary Transit and find out what the scoop is. Hope you get a better job than that temp type one. We do have another member, he can't come, except he usually shows up at Xmas.

 We are listing the shows monthly; also under Schedule we are updating a complete list of shows, since January 2006, in that which was first posted October 2009. Also, the best way to get past shows would be to go to a BitTorrent site or ask VP Ray at a meeting.

Oh, I see about the roommate bit. I've heard about the platonic opposite sex type, but it seems kinda weird to me. I have known Kim (tigerlady) for about 15 years. She wanted to do that; but I had a talk with her a little while ago. I pointed out that it wasn't fair that she wasn't my gf - I would go over to her place and look at hentai. :( :?

:!: About anime and manga fandom in Calgary generally, it is different than Edmonton. For some reason it is older there, and it tends to be more mecha based. With Calgary's demographics, it is more shojo and high school/romantic comedy stuff. So Taylor just might get lucky. Also, Ray does drag some younger fangirls to JAWS from time to time.

I see where there is a mini Anime Expo at Fan Expo (according to Google). No, Animethon is on the FIRST weekend of August! So you can still go to Fan Expo - but you will miss Calgary's SF convention, Con-Version. Kim and I have been trying to coordinate playing anime there on behalf of JAWS. We already do that at the Comic & Toy Expo in October. Don't miss the Comic & Entertainment Expo on April 25-26 (www.calgaryexpo.com). Also - if you can make it back right away from Anime North, please take some pix and we will show them on the big screen at JAWS!! (We showed stuff from Ray's trip to Animethon last year.)

About the cateye contacts, I have heard about these, but Kim and I have been getting cosplay books and magazines, where they are shown. Huh, I would say that people in Calgary are not quite used to them yet. There are a few stores in Calgary that sell goth/punk wear, like Blame Betty on 17th Ave SW downtown. Also, you should go with Kim to Dragon City Mall in Chinatown, they have stores selling anime merchandise and goth/loli outfits. There are actually cosplayers hanging around DCM now!! Kim is improving - she actually wants to become a Sweet Lolita!! :o Also, we want to start wearing cosplay to JAWS again when the weather improves. And Kim and I have had an idea to have people come to JAWS an hour early, we have been trying to start the Calgary Cosplay Club: http://www.geocities.com/calgary_cosplay_club/

Ah! I loves CakeImage! And I missed it! Image
Oh well… I will bring Brownies or something like that next month and I will bring something for Kim too. See if I can’t find some Muchi somewhere in town for herImage

I can’t wait to meet the other people though, it will be fun! I always like to meet new people!

I love to cosplay! Image I have a ton of Cosplay! I have a Kimono, yukata, Lolita outfit, Cat outfit, Gothic dress, Laced Punk, and Candy Lolita. Most of my stuff is still back in Ont though so I don’t have any of it here with me. I will probably pick up a bunch of it when I am back in may. My favourite Cosplay is the classic Lolita Image

I have so many Cons I am going to Image. I might go to the CalgaryExpo, if I can get the time off work, I am going to Anime North, Possible the One in Edmonton, Fan Expo, and the tattoo Con as well… I want get some more tattoos and explore what Calgary has to offer for the tattoo and piercing world.

I have been looking for stores that have cosplay and all the kink stuff that I like but I have only found a few and they didn’t really impress me to much. So I will keep those stores in mind to check out for sure! Image

Just so you know, I know I will not be able to make the one in May because I am staying the week in Ont to visit Family and stuff after the con. However, I will make a slide show, and send the file through email for you so even though I am not there I can still share the Anime North pictures! My friend is also moving to Calgary with me when I come back in May so I am going to be super busy with that lol. I should be able to make the one in April though.

As for what time the posts are made, I am often up till 4am and how lol I don’t really sleep, because I am an insomniac! I went to the Doctors to get tested for it, and the nurse that was watching me sleep (When I did sleep) said I had the oddest sleeping patterns she had ever seen. I even went for an EEG, and the doctor said the same. I guess when I am awake My brain patterns are that of a person who sleeps, and when I sleep my brain patterns are that of a Person who is awake. Weird eh!

April etc. JAWS meetings

:D How about if you bring the Anime North pix in June instead - so you can fully describe the happenings? We should actually coordinate them with VP Ray first; you can ask him yourself at this month's meet. :P I guess could you e-mail them to Kim; did you get her e-mail? Or maybe you have been too busy with work to reply to it? OK, I kinda figured you'd be hanging with the family back home.

I'm glad you're bringing another member! :D Did I mention - we need more members?! Hope y'all can make it on the 29th!! 8)

 Kim likes Mochi OK. Heh, I guess the JAWS emoticons are getting a little redundant or something. Um, Kim herself knows where all these Asian food places are. You can try up Centre St. or in the NE. :!:

I think that Candy Lolita is a variation of Sweet Lolita... that's what Kim is aiming towards. What is your definition of Classic Lolita? It is a little hard to follow out in Cowtown; *all* the cosplay magazines are in Japanese. Kim has some kimonos... she has grown out of one - she could bring it and you could try it on... it is green with gold, and she paid $150 for it. She has also had a cosplay outfit made (Ranma 1/2), but has had it thrown out (though accessories were saved) by her former evil landlord.

There are some kink stores in Calgary... we missed the Calgary Kinky Flea Market - it was *yesterday*!!   It is in a community hall!!! (Though NOT in suburbia!!) They DO have another one in the Fall too! :P As to this weekend, Kim and I were wiped out and not feeling too good - we thought the CKFM was NEXT weekend - they changed it!! :( So I am also finally Replying to your post.

As to the goth or loli scene, Calgary is way behind or something. I was one of the first in Calgary to find out about it... I only started getting on the internet 6 years ago! I found out about the Baby The Stars Shine So Bright stores in Japan thru their website (Sweet/Candy) shortly thereafter. :) Also I wanted to mention before, there are about a dozen serious goths in Calgary... but the number of lolis has exploded from zero upwards recently, in the past couple years - I don't think they're poseurs or trendsurfers! :P About the DCM stores, they have a mixture of lolis, cosplayers and otaku hanging around them.

 Kim and I have been trying to start a cosplay club - we found someone in Calgary on Cosplay.com... hopefully they will show up at the April JAWS meeting? :?:

Kim (on her computer) was kind of weird last time. I should have mentioned, Con-Version (SF) will be moving to October in 2010, I think. Partly because of the costume/Halloween connection. They are not very big; and are divided between Star Wars clones (just couldn't resist) and old-timers.

Also, another thing I want to say, is that JAWS is a fairly old club - maybe going back a couple decades. According to Kim, it evolved out of a now-defunct Doctor Who club! :?: :? So we want to research a proper History Page.

As well, something else I should mention is that the club Mascot - her name is Phin-Phin - is a shark girl: and the club name harkens back to (what else) the JAWS movies popular at the time. I just found some of these old books - I will be bringing them this next time.

Oh, and Phin-Phin is inspired by who else, Lum (green hair). When the dust settles from you move, if you could try your hand at drawing her. See the images on the last club President's website: www.nekoseiproductions.com/

BTW, Kim says to tell you now that she will be bringing certain AMVs (again) - two versions of The History of Anime!! :D

About the sleeping bit, I have Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (officially diagnosed in 1991) - and have similar reversed/mixed brainwaves. Wonder if you also have this - I haven't had a QEEG but the brainwaves are the same in others.

I will get around to posting Replies to gaming and anime series. About putting up a Topic for Manga, the club President is an accountant and tied up in tax season - so after next month, we'll see. Plus actually having more members will help a lot!! :o

Greg misunderstood what I had said, I was trying to figure out when JAWS had first started and that it was THROUGH this defunct Doctor Who Club that I had learned about JAWS.

As to how old it is, I had been going to JAWS for over 10, maybe, 15 years. I do remember that the first Prez of JAWS was Lenard (I don't know his last name  ) and the shows that we saw were on a VHS tapes and they were either dubbed or raw Japanese shows, that were either brought or sent over from Japan. Although there were a few that were subbed.

As to were it was first shown, the old club place was in a room above the Sentry Box in Marda Loop. About a block away from Casablanca video store (2101 33 Avenue SW).

Just visiting this planet?

:!: Huh - but that's what Kim told me. :?

:?: Kim has recently actually started remembering more, about the history of JAWS. :o

 According to Kim, JAWS was playing Baoh (1984-85) at time she joined - no idea how new it was there at the time. Also, JAWS was playing the Outlander anime (1986). Plus the typical period mecha shows. Including Macross (1982 on) and Gundam (1979 on). Mostly dubbed and raw as fansubs were uncommon and crude then. :(

 Kim says that she went to both clubs for about 5 years, then the Doctor Who club - which actually went under a different and more general name re British SF TV - but it somehow died off possibly because he had trouble running it due to frequent moves but also because they started showing Doctor Who on PBS by the early 1990s.

:) JAWS was originally called the Japanimation Avid Watchers' Society through the first President Leonard, and the next 2 presidents. Possibly Chris and Karl, the last 2 presidents, came next, and changed JAWS name (but not acronym) after that. Again, Karl did JAWS first (and belated) mascot. :P

:D Lastly, Kim has clarified that she heard from others back when she joined, that JAWS was among the oldest anime clubs in North America. She probably started going to the Dr. Who club in the early '80's or so, around when she was 20. As well, JAWS predated Kim's arrival by a few years. So, again, JAWS would have been "inspired" by the movies of the same name, and so may date back to at least the mid-1980s, if not earlier. 8)

BTW: According, to Kim's book, "The Complete Anime Guide: Japanese Animation Film Directory & Resource Guide" (2nd and last edition, 1997), in the section on anime fandom, the history of anime clubs dates back to the late 1970s / early 1980s in the US.
